While we were in Utah, eating dinner and heading to the show, all Richard could think about was the Pinewood Derby. He was so nervous for Thomas! Just as we were arriving to the Jim Gaffigan Show, we found out that he won!!! You can see from the video how excited he was. We were sad we couldn't be there, but happy that his car did so well. Great job Richard and Thomas!!! He also won the prize for the most realistic car.

1st Place at the Pinewood Derby
Thomas and Richard sarted work on the Pinewood Derby car a few weeks before the Derby. I'm not sure who was more excited, Richard or Thomas. Richard had Thomas help him with the design. They went with the Corvette look. Richard used a bandsaw to get just the right shape, and Thomas helped him sand it. When it comes to a project like this, Richard is a perfectionist. He will work and work until it is just right - no matter how long it takes. Once it was carved and sanded to perfection, he went to the store that sells scouting supplies and got some special weights made just for Pinewood Derby cars. He carved out the bottom, set the weights in, and covered it with wood filler. Once the filler dried, he sanded the bottom. Once it was painted, you couldn't tell there were weights at all! He managed to get the car to weigh exactly 5 oz. (You are supposed to get it as close to 5 oz. as possible without going over.) As the big day approached, we were informed that it would be held on the Friday of that week instead of Thursday. Unfortunately, this was the Friday that Richard and I were going to be attending the Jim Gaffigan show in Salt Lake! This was upsetting news to say the least! Luckily, my Dad was able to fill in for us, and even made a video that Richard posted on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNUwli9ty9A
