A Tree of Memories #3

"First" Christmas

These ornaments are great for reminding me how much different we look now than we did back then; or how much older; or bigger. Or, however you want to put it. But, I love that I did this – before I became too practical. After all, you only get one "First" Christmas!

When this picture was taken (December 25, 1998), Richard and I had been married for nine and a half months. Our first Christmas was also Thomas’ first Christmas. Yup! We had Thomas on December 19, 1998. Richard and I have never spent a Christmas alone (as in - without children) together. Of course, these pictures bring back memories of that first year of marriage; of having our first child; of being so new, not only to the whole marriage thing, but to the whole parenting thing as well. There were many, many “firsts” that year. Despite the fact that I had aced two child development classes, nothing could have prepared me for what having a child would be like. To say it was an “adjustment” is an understatement. The day Thomas joined our little world was the day we embarked on an entirely new journey. And there was no going back. The word “sacrifice” took on a whole new meaning. Giving up our time, interests, and sleep in order to care for, and properly rear another human being who is completely dependant upon us for survival isn’t always, well, a picnic! Come to think of it, a picnic isn’t always a picnic either. But, despite the many inconveniences, it didn’t take long to realize that we wouldn’t change a thing. We wouldn’t go back if we had the opportunity! No way! Each child is our lifeblood, a source of pure joy, an every day miracle.

  2. You are so well spoken. It has been fun to read. I feel like there is so much that we have missed. I wish we had kept in touch over the past 13 years.
